One of our best "couple" friends moved here almost 2 years ago after visiting for many years. (The newest arrivals have to be Santa at the annual holiday party!) So now they have a set of friends who live in Monterey who also want to move here, so we did a little house hunting on Sunday.
What's fun about that is showing off the beauty of Nevada County, as well as getting a peek into other people's homes and lifestyles.
And there is a variety of decisions that must be made: Do you want high or low elevation? Do you want to walk to town? Do you want neighbors nearby or more privacy? Do you want acreage? Do you need a lot of sun for gardening/vegetables? Do you need a fenced yard?
I think they want to come here for the lifestyle and culture. They were quite impressed to hear about the sustainability movement, slow foods, community gardens, etc. that happen here. Guess Monterey isn't that progressive?

On another note, I finally checked out Nevada City Seafood Co. in Whispering Pines. Yikes! I was all set to buy some salmon until I discovered that 1.3 pounds of salmon would be $25! Do they have a lot of customers? Has anyone else shopped there?
We shop at Nevada City Seafood and if you are on his email list, you get sale notices several times a week. Talking about sustainable foods, slow food movements and so on... Eric buys from fishermen who line catch everything; he goes down to the Bay area several times a week to bring the fish back himself ... we buy wonderful tilapia at a very reasonable price, Alaskan cod, shrimp and so on. Salmon is quite expensive now as there is a very short supply ... but he sells more than salmon. And, it is important, in this day in age of tainted food supplies to know where your food comes from and that it is not artificially colored red.
This store, as well as our many small organic farms, wineries and so on are the example of the demand for quality food supplies that are not shipped thousands of miles and soaked in preservatives.

How about asking them how they feel about the possibilty of a big cyanide leach mine opening in the middle of Grass Valley?
Explain the proposed non-stop 24/7 truck traffic and the air quality impacts that the DEIR says can't be mitigated.
Talk to them about this, give them links to find out more information about the IMM and see how they feel after getting informed on this insane proposal.
