Stonehouse Comes Alive:
Robert Trent (Velocity 7 co-owner, social media dude, marketing guru, Airstream lover) is holding an invitation-only event Wednesday night on the third floor of The Stonehouse. He plans to unveil his "business incubator" concept and get folks together to figure out how we can all help get fledgling businesses off the ground. At least, I think that's the general concept. I'll know more after the event. Robert has always been an ahead-of-the-curve kind of guy, so this is an exciting venture. Stay tuned.
Thrift Shop Culture:
Did you realize we have extraordinary thrift shops here in Nevada County? Some friends' college grad daughters say that Santa Cruz area thrift shops are "picked clean" because all the students -- and not-so-rich recent grads --shop there. They found some great deals here, both in clothes and household goodies. I like that the 20-somethings embrace re-using rather than everything being shiny new all the time.
Are Antique Shops Going the Way of the Do-Do Bird?:
I noticed they were mostly boarded up on Bainbridge Island and I started thinking...antiques were HUGE in my era (Baby Boomers) but hold little if zero appeal to our kids. They do like "retro" like 50s stuff, but the rest of it is a big turn off. Is there still a market for antiques? I know the friends of mine who still have them are not getting any more pieces (especially furniture!) so who is buying this stuff?
It's a Dog's Life:
See the latest Time Magazine (Unemployment is the cover story) for a review of "Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell & Know." Fascinating! I wonder if Time and Newsweek will be around a year from now? We still subscribe because they offer us ridiculous $20 a year prices, but the concept seems a little outdated. I like "The Week," put out by the BBC. Short, sweet and comprehensive!
