As someone who was a housewife (!) in the 60s and 70s, I can appreciate how the world was then. We could all afford to stay home with our kids while our husbands worked, and we got together for "coffee" often -- talking about our lives as our children played together. It was idyllic, really, in those days in Seal Beach! We were all different, probably wouldn't know one another except our close neighbors, but our children brought us together. We had a babysitting co-op, a nursery school co-op, and a crime-free, walking-friendly community to play in.
When I see "The View," and those women talking about themselves and world events, it reminds me of my housewife days, except The View is like a virtual coffee klatch.
Where I live now -- Cascade Shores -- it is very similar to those days of long ago. We have an old-fashioned "Women's Club" that gets together for socials, games, outings and parties for the neighborhood children.
The other day we had a potluck Soup Lunch and Bingo with White Elephant event at our Firehouse -- the de facto Women's Club clubhouse. There were about 22 of us, ranging in age from young mom to great grandma. We had four types of delicious soup, homemade bread and corn bread, to-die-for-fudge and other decadent desserts. We talked about life, love, the world and our families, ate great food and played Bingo while winners opened white elephants.
As I looked around the table at one point, I thought, "This is a true 1950 Americana moment."
When I was working (has it been almost a year? yikes!) I would see notices for the Women's Club and wish I could attend. Same with the Monday, Wednesday, Friday walking group. And now I'm a part of that. It's almost as if I have come full circle in life.
